#### Donata is an Estates Manager at [[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk]](https://www.olivehackney.com/) and completed a Level 5 Facilities Specialist Operations Manager Apprenticeship with GLP Training which was funded by Star’s Apprenticeship Levy. We asked her to reflect on her experience, the support she received, and how the programme has helped to shape her future career.

Why did you decide to commence an apprenticeship?

“I chose to begin an apprenticeship because it offered a structured pathway to gain a formal qualification while developing higher-level skills and practical knowledge that I could immediately apply to my day-to-day work. It allowed me to progress my professional development without needing to step away from employment, making it the ideal balance of learning and real-world experience.”

What kind of support do you receive from your tutor and colleagues?

“The support I received was exceptional. My tutor Robert provided clear explanations, regular feedback and consistent encouragement throughout the programme. He was approachable, patient and always willing to help me understand complex topics, taking the time to break down challenging concepts and link learning to real-life workplace scenarios, which really helped to motivate me and build my confidence. His professionalism and positive attitude made a huge difference and turned what could have been a challenging journey into an enjoyable and empowering one.

“My colleagues were equally supportive, offering guidance, sharing their own experiences and giving me opportunities to apply my learning on the job. Having both academic and workplace support made a huge difference in my progress.”

How does Star Academies support its employees to learn and develop their skills?

“Star Academies played a key role in fostering an environment where learning could thrive. I was encouraged to take on new responsibilities, contribute to projects and put my developing skills into practice. The organisation actively promoted my professional growth, recognising the value that apprenticeship training brings. Their culture of continuous improvement helped me stretch my abilities and grow both personally and professionally.”

How do you think your apprenticeship will help you in your future career?

“The apprenticeship has had a significant impact on my career. It has deepened my understanding of leadership, operations and professional standards, allowing me to perform my role with greater confidence and effectiveness. I now approach my responsibilities with a deeper level of insight and a more strategic mindset, and tackle challenges with enhanced problem-solving skills and improved decision-making. The qualification has opened up new opportunities and provided a strong foundation for future progression.”

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

“An apprenticeship offers a valuable opportunity to learn, grow and earn accredited qualifications while working. It does require commitment, but the skills and knowledge you gain are well worth the effort. Make the most of the support available, stay organised and be open to new challenges. The personal and professional rewards are lasting, and the experience can truly make a difference to your future career.”
