#### Why did you decide to commence an apprenticeship?

“I originally qualified with a degree in Digital Arts and a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Video Games Production. After owning my own video games store for 14 years, I decided I wanted to give back to society and had always been interested in teaching. Upon discovering that Eden Boys’ Leadership Academy, Manchester was seeking a science technician, I seized the opportunity to apply. Despite lacking a science background, I was given the opportunity to develop my knowledge and skills through an apprenticeship programme.”

#### What kind of support did you receive from your tutor and colleagues?

“My tutor was always there to advise and assist me with my studies. My line manager and colleagues were considerate of the fact that I was still learning and they fully supported me in my role. It was helpful to work with other teaching professionals who shared their knowledge and experience, making the transition into an educational setting much easier for me.”

#### What benefits have you seen from your apprenticeship training?

“I am more equipped with the knowledge I need to do my job, especially when it comes to health and safety and good laboratory management practice. This has enabled me to provide the science department with well-equipped labs that are conducive to effective learning. My passion for teaching has continued to grow and I pride myself on providing lessons, demonstrations and experiments that give pupils the opportunity to experience the wonder and excitement of science. My hope is that this will ignite a spark within them to pursue a STEM-related career when they leave school.”

#### How do you think your apprenticeship has helped you in your career?

“Now that I have completed my apprenticeship, I look forward to continuing in my role as a science technician. I feel as though I’ve truly found my purpose within a fulfilling and rewarding career path. Each day presents new opportunities for growth and contribution, and a chance to make a meaningful impact on pupils’ lives.”

#### What advice would you give to someone who’s considering an apprenticeship?

“The pathway you take to your ideal career doesn’t have to be straightforward. An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to retrain in a different field without having to take a career break, offering hands-on learning experiences alongside an academic qualification. My career pathway may have been different from that of the typical science graduate, but I now feel equipped with the knowledge and practical skills I need to perform at my best and excel in my future career.”
