A leading global insurer is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to join its Construction team in Birmingham. This is a hands-on, mid-market role offering excellent exposure to construction underwriting within a well-established and growing team. You will be responsible for growing the Middle Market portfolio while managing and developing existing accounts. The role offers a strong balance between new business and renewals, with a clear focus on delivering ambitious growth targets.

Commercial Underwriter – Construction

Location: Birmingham (4 days in the office)

Salary: £30,000 – £45,000 + benefits & bonus

A leading global insurer is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to join its Construction team in Birmingham. This is a hands-on, mid-market role offering excellent exposure to construction underwriting within a well-established and growing team.

You will be responsible for growing the Middle Market portfolio while managing and developing existing accounts. The role offers a strong balance between new business and renewals, with a clear focus on delivering ambitious growth targets.

The Role

  • Underwrite and develop construction package business
  • Manage renewals alongside new business opportunities
  • Work extensively with an established construction e-trade platform, supporting broker-submitted risks
  • Typical risks average around £25k GWP, with scope to grow to £100k+ as volumes increase
  • Build and maintain strong broker relationships through regular engagement

Training & Development

This is a highly collaborative, hands-on position with structured training and mentoring from Senior Underwriters. You will sit closely with the team to review submissions, gain exposure across multiple areas of construction underwriting, and gradually build your technical expertise.

About You

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Comfortable working collaboratively across the business
  • Construction underwriting experience is preferred, however candidates with relevant insurance experience and a strong desire to learn construction will also be considered.
