Job summary

This post represents an exciting job opportunity for a locally employed, tier 3 doctor. This is ST3 equivalent. The holder of this post will be expected to work at a senior level in the Emergency Department, providing knowledge, clinical skills and experience, with supervision from tier 4 and 5 clinicians. The post comes with key benefits including self-rostering, protected non-clinical time, and a dedicated supervisor to provide support, learning opportunities and supervision.

Tier 3 doctors are expected to possess all of the competencies as laid out by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and have achieved adequate entrustment levels in all areas of the EM curriculum. This includes the ability to intervene effectively in an emergency, organise and control input from other specialties, and to provide definitive treatment within the scope and facilities of the Emergency Department.

The job comes with many advantages including working in a brand-new, purpose built emergency village. There will be an 80:20 split between clinical and non-clinical time. Non-clinical time can be used to pursue the specific interests of the post holder - there are many opportunities available to pursue quality improvement, research, ultrasound and teaching. The department welcomes those considering CESR training and qualification.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties with include all of those normally expected of ST3 doctors in similar sized emergency departments in the UK. The post holder will be expected to be able to run any area of the department, with remote support and supervision when necessary. This will include leading resuscitation, managing the ambulance triage area, caring for patients in majors and minors, and looking after paediatric patients. There will always be a tier 4 or higher clinician present to provide direct support.

  • Work with colleagues of all grades and provide support and supervision to junior clinical staff at all times
  • To follow a plan of personal professional development under the guidance of the Head of Department
  • To seek advice when necessary from the Department's consultant and other senior staff
  • To assist with the training and continuous professional development of the junior doctors
  • To participate in the audit, research and teaching activities of the department
  • To engage with a regular process of formal education supervision including a formative annual review of progress

Hold RCEM membership and maintain an RCEM e-portfolio
