Job summary

We are looking for a Junior Clinical Fellow on a 12 month fixed term contract to support the trauma and orthopaedic service and develop their surgical and diagnostic skills with a view to furthering a career in trauma and orthopaedics.

Main duties of the job

- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in Trauma and Orthopaedic with responsibility for core Trauma and Orthopaedic services. - In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate. - In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met. - To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary. - In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. - In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for and devote time to teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required for junior medical staff. - In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department. - To observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trust's Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Full registration with the GMC at time of application
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Satisfactory completion of Foundation programme (or equivalent evidence of competence) at the time of application
  • Current ALS certification

Desirable

  • Satisfactory completion of core medical training (or equivalent evidence of competence)
  • MRCS
  • Distinctions, scholarships, prizes

Clinical Care (Knowledge and Skills)

Essential

  • Competent in basic clinical procedures eg CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking etc
  • Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands the need for and appreciates the role of audit in clinical practice
  • Understands the principles of clinical governance - ensures patients are not put at risk
  • Understands the importance of working effectively in teams
  • Computer literate
  • Has participated in quality improvement

Desirable

  • Knowledge of UK health systems, practices and values and awareness of current issues in the NHS
