What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking an experienced and committed Director of English to support the Deputy Headteacher in raising standards of attainment and achievement across the English faculty. The postholder will lead and manage high‑quality teaching and learning, monitor pupil progress and contribute strategically to the development of the curriculum in line with national and school priorities.

  • Lead, develop and evaluate teaching and learning across the English department.
  • Monitor pupil progress, analyse assessment data and implement strategies to raise achievement.
  • Coordinate the delivery of English across all Key Stages to ensure continuity and progression.
  • Review and develop curriculum plans, policies and long‑term schemes of work.
  • Line‑manage staff, support professional development and contribute to performance management.
  • Produce and monitor an annual Faculty Improvement Plan aligned with school priorities.
  • Ensure high standards in assessment, reporting and tracking of pupil progress.
  • Work collaboratively with senior leaders, governors and external agencies to support whole‑school improvement.
  • Uphold the aims, ethos and values of the school and contribute fully to quality assurance processes.

The ideal candidate will be an effective classroom practitioner with strong leadership skills, excellent organisational ability and a clear commitment to raising standards for all pupils. The candidate will demonstrate the capacity to lead a team, evaluate practice and implement improvements that positively impact learning.
