What skills and experience we're looking for

Are you ready to be the difference that helps young people rediscover hope, confidence, and a love of learning?

Now entering its second year, The Lighthouse, our nurturing school‑within‑a‑school Alternative Curriculum Provision, has already made remarkable progress, with many students reengaging in education. We are seeking aninspiring, relational, and forward‑thinking leader to guide The Lighthouse into its next phase, supporting young people experiencing Emotionally Based School Non Attendance (EBSNA), and building a culture where every young person feels safe, valued, and ready to thrive. This is an extraordinary opportunity to lead a provision that is genuinely transforming lives and opening up new futures for our young people who need it most.

We are looking for…

  • A values‑driven teacher with strong moral purpose and excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Someone with experience of curriculum planning, personalised learning, and working with students who face significant barriers to engagement.
  • A practitioner skilled in relational practice, trauma‑informed approaches, and supporting learners experiencing EBSA.
  • A flexible, creative leader who can line‑manage staff, build strong professional relationships, and work collaboratively with colleagues, families, and external agencies.
  • A reflective educator committed to ongoing professional development and modelling high‑quality teaching.

What the school offers its staff

In return, we offer…

  • The opportunity to lead a rapidly developing, high‑impact provision that is already changing lives in its first year.
  • A supportive, ambitious Trust with strong networks, including SEND collaboration and rich professional learning opportunities.
  • A committed team, positive culture, and the chance to shape innovative curriculum pathways within a school‑within‑a‑school model.
  • The space to embed your vision for relational practice, alternative learning, and inclusion, making a profound difference to learners who need it most.

[Employer hidden] is one of the largest secondary schools in the country with over 2,200 students currently enrolled (over 300 of these in Post 16). The College, which converted to Academy status in April 2011, is set in a leafy split-site location. Our catchment area extends northwards towards Exeter city and eastwards to include Budleigh Salterton and many attractive rural villages. The College embraces working as part of the community and has strong local partnerships.

Our mission is to provide a well-structured, enjoyable, and positive approach to learning that rewards student success and allows for individual aptitudes to flourish. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive College that caters to all abilities.

Our College provides a safe, secure, and non-threatening environment in which students can develop consideration for others, self-discipline and positive relationships. We strive to offer an education that prepares students for their future.

The [Employer hidden] Trust is overseen by the Governing Board who are committed to delivering the best comprehensive education for the young people of Exmouth and the surrounding villages.

We put the development of staff at the centre of our philosophy, including a unique Assistant Headteacher role with responsibility for our staff and their development. We take it really seriously, and very much subscribe to Richard Branson's mantra to develop our staff well enough so they can leave but treat them well enough so they don't want to.

There is a really strong sense of community at ECC. Through us all working together as staff, families and governors, and pulling together as one community, we will continue the great work to build a College that caters brilliantly for its community and prepares our young people for their future.

[Employer hidden] is a fully comprehensive academy committed to giving the best education and opportunities to all of our students. We invite you to explore our website to find out more about our College.
