[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] is looking for an experienced and driven Environmental Protection Manager to lead a high‑profile regulatory service that directly improves residents’ quality of life. This is a management role with real influence — leading on air quality, pollution control, contaminated land, environmental permitting, noise and major infrastructure impacts, while shaping policy, strategy and enforcement practice in a large, diverse and fast‑growing borough.
About the role
Reporting to the Head of Environmental Health & Trading Standards, you will provide leadership and direction for the Council’s Environmental Protection function, ensuring statutory duties are met while driving continuous improvement and innovation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and managing the Environmental Protection team, including specialist officers covering air quality, noise, contaminated land and major projects
- Delivering the Council’s statutory environmental protection and pollution control functions, including Part A/B environmental permitting
- Acting as the Council’s expert lead on air quality, noise, land contamination and pollution impacts, including advising planning and development management
- Managing environmental impacts arising from major infrastructure and regeneration projects, negotiating monitoring and mitigation with developers and partners
- Overseeing the Council’s air quality and noise monitoring networks, including procurement and contract management
- Developing and delivering strategies, action plans and policies through the political process, aligned with climate change and public health priorities
- Commissioning services and identifying opportunities for external funding and income generation
- Leading staff development, performance management, recruitment and change
About you
You will be a credible environmental protection professional with leadership experience.
Essential experience
- Substantial management experience within an enforcement‑based public protection or regulatory service
- Strong working knowledge of environmental protection and pollution legislation, including enforcement practice
- Experience managing complex, high-risk cases and overseeing legal processes
- Experience of advising senior officers and elected members
- A track record of service improvement, change management and staff development
Essential qualifications
- A scientific or Environmental Health degree (or equivalent)
- Competency in at least two environmental protection specialisms relevant to the role
- Evidence of continuous professional development
