Independent person

Independent persons are people appointed to provide advice to the council on its code of conduct for councillors and in relation to any complaints made under the code. They cannot be employees or members of the council.

They are not legally subject to the code of conduct, but they are expected to observe the principles governing councillors’ behaviour in carrying out their duties. They are required to provide their views on complaints, may also be asked to advise councillors themselves, and will attend meetings of the Standards Sub-Committee in an advisory, non-voting capacity when necessary. The initial appointment will be for a period of 3 years.

Payments to co-opted members and independent persons

The independent persons are entitled an allowance.

Additional salary details

A fixed allowance of £1,203 per annum is payable for each year of appointment together with the reimbursement of travel expenses.
