Project Manager

Working under the leadership of the relevant Operations Manager, the Project Manager is accountable for delivering projects safely, compliantly, on time and within budget.

Job Description

1. Role, purpose, and scope - The Project Manager is responsible for the planning, coordination and delivery of projects across [Employer hidden] Group service lines, including Fabrication & Manufacture, Pressure Equipment, Mechanical Services, Welding Overlay and Electrical Services. - Working under the leadership of the relevant Operations Manager, the Project Manager is accountable for delivering projects safely, compliantly, on time and within budget. The role oversees Project Supervisors, site teams, and subcontractors, ensuring that contractual, regulatory, and company standards are consistently met. - Typically responsible for one project at a time (occasionally two depending on scale and complexity), the Project Manager acts as the primary operational interface between [Employer hidden] and the client, ensuring clear communication, structured execution and disciplined commercial control. - The role requires strong organisational, technical and leadership capability, with direct accountability for day-to-day project performance and client satisfaction.

2. Principal accountabilities

The Project Manager is responsible for:

  • Preparing and delivering structured project plans, programmes and resource allocations in accordance with P06 Project Management processes.
  • Ensuring works are delivered safely, to specification, on time and within approved budgets.
  • Monitoring project progress, identifying risks and escalating issues to the Operations Manager where required.
  • Leading project kick-off, progress review and close-out meetings, capturing lessons learned.
  • Overseeing day-to-day site activities, coordinating Project Supervisors, trades and subcontractors.
  • Ensuring compliance with site procedures, permits, risk assessments and client requirements.
  • Conducting site or workshop inspections to confirm quality, safety and environmental standards are upheld.
  • Liaising with the Labour Manager to ensure competent and appropriately qualified personnel are allocated.
  • Coordinating with Stores and Supply Chain to ensure materials, tools and equipment are available, compliant and calibrated where required.
  • Managing subcontractor performance in line with SP01 Procurement and commercial procedures.
  • Reviewing, approving and submitting payroll timesheets for project personnel, ensuring accuracy, compliance and timely submission in line with company procedures.
  • Verifying and approving client billable timesheets, ensuring labour, plant and material records are accurate, authorised and aligned with contractual agreements prior to invoicing.
  • Promoting and enforcing compliance with P11 Hazard Identification, P13 Environmental Impacts, SP11 Operational Safety Control and SP12 Accident Reporting.
  • Leading toolbox talks, safety briefings and ensuring risk assessments and method statements are implemented and followed.
  • Ensuring project documentation is complete, accurate and controlled in line with SP07 Document Control and SP08 Records.
  • Delivering defect-free work and ensuring compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
  • Supporting audits, inspections and continual improvement initiatives.
  • Acting as the primary client contact for project matters, providing structured updates and progress reports.
  • Managing commercial performance, including variation control, cost tracking and margin protection.
  • Supervising Project Supervisors and site personnel, ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities.
  • Supporting the development of junior team members through mentoring, coaching and structured feedback.

3. Organisational Relationships and Behaviours

Reports to: Reports directly to the Operations Manager.

Line Management Responsibility: Project Supervisors, Site-based personnel allocated to the project.

Key Internal Interfaces: Operations Manager – operational oversight and escalation, Labour Manager – resource allocation and competency, Procurement Manager – purchasing compliance, Stores Manager – tools, materials and equipment, HSE Officer – safety and compliance support, Commercial Manager – contractual and financial governance, Engineering team – technical support and documentation, Payroll – onboarding and timesheets.

Key External Interfaces: Clients and third-party inspectors.

5. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in project management within power generation, marine, offshore or industrial engineering sectors.
  • Strong understanding of project lifecycle management and structured delivery processes.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, schedules and teams in technically demanding environments.
  • Practical experience working within an Integrated Management System (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
  • Competent in interpreting technical drawings, specifications and contractual documentation.
  • Strong commercial awareness including cost tracking and variation management.
  • Excellent communication and client management skills.

Desirable

  • Professional qualification in Project Management (e.g. APM, PRINCE2, PMP).
  • Engineering qualification relevant to [Employer hidden] service lines (mechanical, electrical, fabrication, welding or pressure systems).
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent health and safety qualification.
  • Experience managing projects across multiple UK or European jurisdictions.
  • Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards professional registration.
