The Role:

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Additional Learning Support (ALS) Team Leader to lead and coordinate a team of Learning Support Assistants, delivering high‑quality, inclusive support for learners enrolled on low‑cost and short‑duration programmes. This role is central to ensuring learners with social, emotional, mental health, behavioural and complex needs are fully supported to engage, progress and achieve. You will provide day‑to‑day leadership of ALS staff, oversee timetabling and absence cover, and act as the lead on targeted interventions for High Needs students. You will play a key role in safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults, working collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies to ensure the best outcomes for learners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise a team of Learning Support Assistants, including timetabling and sickness cover.
  • Act as the lead practitioner for specialist support and behavioural interventions for individuals and small groups of students.
  • Design and implement behavioural strategies to support High Needs learners.
  • Develop and oversee support plans and Learning Support allocations for a caseload of High Needs students.
  • Lead on Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) within the assigned directorate.
  • Support transition, assessment, guidance and enrolment for students requiring ALS.
  • Work closely with the High Needs Co‑ordinator and external multi‑agency partners, including health and care providers.
  • Ensure Service Level Agreements are in place when working with external agencies.
  • Deliver training sessions for new staff as part of the College induction programme.
  • Support students practically where required, including in lessons, exams, transitions and College activities
  • Undertake staff appraisals in line with College policy.
  • Actively engage in continuous professional development, including innovative approaches and technologies.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise:

Qualifications:

  • Level 2 qualification in supporting learners in an educational setting (or commitment to complete).
  • Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent).
  • Certificate in Behaviour Management (desirable).
  • Team Teach qualification (desirable).
  • Teaching or training qualification (desirable).

Experience:

  • Experience supporting learners with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
  • Experience working with disengaged young people aged 14–19 (up to 24 with SEN).
  • Proven experience working with external agencies to support learners with complex needs.
  • Track record of supporting students to engage and achieve (desirable).

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of SEN, SEMH, and barriers to learning.
  • Experience of completing EHCP reviews.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to motivate, lead, and develop staff effectively.
  • High level of IT competence and ability to prioritise under pressure.
  • Professional, flexible, and proactive approach with a commitment to safeguarding.
