Role Overview
As an Assistant Tax Manager, you will manage your own portfolio of private client tax cases, ensuring timely and accurate delivery of self-assessment compliance work. You will oversee junior staff, delegating and reviewing tax returns as required. In addition, you will support the Senior Tax Managers and Directors on more complex compliance matters and assist with advisory projects on an ad hoc basis. Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of private client tax cases, including HNWIs, landlords and international clients.
- Review and finalise personal tax returns prepared by junior team members.
- Ensure all filing deadlines and compliance obligations are met.
- Maintain high-quality client service, responding to queries promptly and professionally.
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise and support junior staff preparing tax returns and related computations.
- Provide training, guidance and technical feedback to help develop junior team members’ skills.
- Assist in workload planning and workflow management across the team.
Complex Compliance & Advisory Support
- Work closely with the Senior Tax Managers and Directors on complex cases, including residence/Foreign Income and Gains regime, CGT, trusts, estates, and international tax issues.
- Support with tax planning projects and advisory assignments, conducting research and preparing reports.
- Draft client communications, tax planning summaries, and briefing notes as required.
Client Relationships
- Build strong, trusted relationships with clients and act as a key point of contact for your portfolio.
- Attend client meetings, with support where appropriate.
- Identify opportunities to add value and highlight areas for potential advisory work.
Skills & Experience Required
- ATT and/or CTA qualified (or equivalent experience).
- Strong experience in personal tax compliance within a practice environment.
- Ability to manage a busy portfolio and review work prepared by others.
- Strong technical knowledge and willingness to develop expertise in more complex private client areas.
- Excellent communication skills and a client-focused mindset.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work to deadlines.
Desirable
- Experience with residence and domicile matters, capital gains tax, or inheritance tax.
- Prior experience supervising or mentoring junior staff.
- Interest in developing your advisory skills.
