The role involves creating real-time lighting for environments, characters, and cinematics, collaborating with other departments, and optimizing lighting systems. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a deep understanding of lighting principles, and experience with real-time lighting in modern game engines.

[Employer hidden] is an independent video game developer based in Hackney Wick, East London, founded by Jamie Walker and Sefton Hill, previous founders of Rocksteady and the creative leadership team of Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series.

Growing to a maximum of 100 people over the next few years, we’re doing things differently at Hundred Star, so we can focus on making great games and building meaningful connections with those we work with.

We’re looking for a Senior Lighting Artist to join our growing studio and bring stunning visual experiences to life for our players.

Working closely with our Lead Lighting Artist and other creative departments within the studio, you’ll play a key role in helping shape and improve lighting across the project and within our Cinematic sequences.

*We’re a hybrid studio, with everyone working in studio Tuesday through Thursday, with Mondays and Fridays open to WFH within the UK.*

In this role you will:

  • Build stunning real-time lighting across environments, characters, and cinematics, ensuring a beautiful seamless experience and artistic consistency throughout the game.
  • Work closely with Environment Art, VFX, and Design to achieve communicative and cohesive visuals across the project.
  • Prototype and deliver visual targets, showcasing the craft of lighting towards gameplay readability, emotional tone, and narrative intent.
  • Balance artistic excellence with performance, optimising lighting systems to meet platform and engine requirements.
  • Act as a bridge between art and engineering, collaborating to refine rendering features, shaders, and lighting pipelines.
  • Drive the development of advanced tooling and workflow processes in partnership with Technical Art and Engineering, to improve efficiency and creative flexibility.
  • Ensure timely and consistent lighting delivery, aligning work with production milestones and broader visual goals.

What we’re looking for:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a focus on creating strong interdisciplinary relationships across the studio for ease of problem solving.
  • Deep understanding of the craft of lighting in visually communicating intent to guide the player and evoke emotions that add to the overall experience.
  • Strong knowledge of lighting aesthetics such as value and colour, shading, PBR and HDR for real-time applications, including optimisation for performance and quality.
  • Experience lighting both gameplay spaces and cinematic sequences and achieving seamless flow between them.
  • Confident creating and achieving best-in-class lighting with highly realistic character performance in cinematics
  • Prior experience with real-time lighting in modern game engines.
  • Curious when problem solving and comfortable working independently, taking responsibility for the visual quality.
  • A broad interest in aspects of visual art including video games (e.g. photography, cinematography, painting, etc.).
  • Knowledge of image editing, compositing and professional colour grading software (e.g. Photoshop, Nuke, Davinci Resolve).
