Assist HoRnD with resource planning and managing the workload, manage the team in relation to their training and development needs, KPI’s, recruitment, holidays and other admin management activities.

REPORTS TO: Head of R&D

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Rotherham sites, with travel to third parties as required

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

To define, design, create and maintain [Employer hidden] wireless systems and sensor products, including wireless protocols, software layers and hardware blocks. This encompasses existing legacy and next generation designs. Provide technical leadership for the wireless and sensors team. Assist HoRnD with resource planning and managing the workload, manage the team in relation to their training and development needs, KPI’s, recruitment, holidays and other admin management activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as a Manager for the wireless and sensor team to ensure clarity on technical solution direction, individual scope of work/task allocation and priorities.
  • Act as a Technical Lead by creating innovative & suitable product & technology ideas, conduct internal brainstorming sessions to ensure the best technical solutions is being recommended and act as SME to the wider R&D/Engineering Team.
  • Design and architect scalable wireless networks, evaluate and select appropriate wireless protocols
  • Define standards for sensor hardware selection, and oversee technical architecture and assist with design making
  • Foster a problem solving mind-set, welcome all relevant problems with a “can do” attitude, and provide solutions both internally to the R&D/Engineering Team, and to other external business departments such as: QA, Technical Support, Sales, Supply Chain and Product Management.
  • Implement robust security protocols and ensure all wireless deployments comply with local and international regulations and standards.
  • Provide assistance as a subject matter expert during concept development and attend any related meetings
  • Consider installation, customer requirements, production and manufacturing methods during the design process
  • Work with the Head of R&D and the Programme Manager to drive efficient communication, process adherence, and stakeholder engagement.

KEY SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Minimum of HND Level education in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science or a related field.
  • 3+years of experience in wireless networking, IoT infrastructure/embedded systems.
  • Programming Skills – does not need to be programming in the current position, but recent experience and visible past projects would be beneficial to any application
  • Strong Project Management abilities, capable of managing multiple deployments simultaneously.
  • Ability to explain complex technical RF concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Have an excellent work ethic and be self-motivated.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a “hands-on” approach to troubleshooting.
  • Microsoft Office advanced competence – Word; PowerPoint; Excel required
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to build relationships, ability to work as part of a team

Desirable / Non-Essential

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Engineering in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in wireless networking, IoT infrastructure or embedded systems with relevant programming skills.
  • Previous experience working in Intruder Alarm Industry.
  • Experience in designing a proprietary radio system.
  • Practical experience or strong familiarity with CE compliance for wireless products, including relevant EN standards (RED Directive, EMC, RF exposure, EN 50131 Grade 2/3).
  • Familiar with Product Testing, most specifically “walk testing”
  • Experience working in mature SME environment.
  • Sub GHz SRD wireless experience (Lora, Z-Wave, ZigBee, Sigfox etc)
  • Experience in sensor design including hardware, software, mechanics and optics.
  • A valid passport and ability to attain working visas in operating regions.

Since the business was founded in 1986, [Employer hidden] has remained a leader in the UK Intruder and Hold-Up Alarm System (I&HAS) industry. We have a strong team of over 150 employees, with 40 dedicated technical staff in R&D/Engineering. We produce a large suite of electronic products throughout the security space in high volume, in excess of 120,000 units per month.

We are recruiting for this role to secure the delivery of our technical development programme.

We are looking for an individual who; enjoys a challenge; the opportunity to work with an experienced R&D/Engineering staff who have led the way in their field; see their own ideas develop quickly from concept to finished product; and seeks personal development via both internal and external opportunities.

We are open to reviewing applications from all levels of experience as long as a majority of the essential requirements are met. Those who are interested in IoT; Raspberry Pi; low-power battery devices; or circuit design at a hobbyist or previous academic level would be ideal for this role. WORKING PATTERN

  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Flexible working pattern with core hours of 9am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday available after following successful probation period.
  • Onsite presence required daily from the start of the role, hybrid working may be considered following successful probation period.
