Private Sector Housing Officer

A Local Authority in Surrey is looking for an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer to join their busy and supportive team.

Contract Details:

  • 3-month initial contract (with potential for extension)
  • £55 per hour (Inside IR35)
  • 2 days per week in the office, with the remainder remote

This is a solid opportunity to join a well-established team managing a varied private sector caseload, with a strong focus on enforcement and improving housing standards.

The Role

You will be responsible for managing a diverse workload across the private rented sector, with duties including:

  • Carrying out property inspections across the borough
  • Investigating housing disrepair, hazards, and tenant complaints
  • Assessing properties using HHSRS
  • Undertaking enforcement action in line with the Housing Act 2004
  • Drafting and serving statutory notices
  • Issuing Civil Penalties and progressing enforcement cases
  • Handling HMO inspections and supporting licensing compliance
  • Liaising with landlords, tenants, and internal stakeholders
  • Preparing case files and supporting legal proceedings where required

This role would suit a Private Sector Housing Officer confident managing inspections, complaints, and enforcement cases within a Local Authority setting.

About You

To be considered, you should have:

  • Proven experience working as a Private Sector Housing Officer or within Housing Enforcement
  • Strong knowledge of Housing Act 2004 and HHSRS
  • Experience issuing notices, civil penalties, or taking enforcement action
  • Ability to manage your own caseload effectively
  • Strong communication skills when dealing with landlords, tenants, and stakeholders
