Software Controls Engineer

You’ll develop, configure and commission PLC, HMI/SCADA and related automation software solutions, ensuring systems meet client requirements for safety, performance and reliability. You will collaborate with project engineers and site teams to deliver projects on time and to specification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and test PLC control logic (e.g. Mitsubishi and Schneider Electric) and associated function blocks.
  • Develop HMI/SCADA applications and visualisation (such as WinCC, Wonderware, Ignition or equivalent).
  • Perform FAT/SAT activities, commissioning and on‑site support for automated systems.
  • Integrate industrial drives, motion control and fieldbus/industrial Ethernet networks.
  • Produce clear technical documentation, software revision records and configuration backups.
  • Work with electrical and mechanical teams to support panel wiring, cable schedules and installation checks.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, client specifications and company processes.
  • Provide technical support to clients and colleagues, including training and handover documentation.

What You’ll Bring

  • Relevant engineering qualification (HNC, HND, degree or equivalent) or proven practical experience in controls engineering.
  • Strong experience programming PLCs and HMIs/SCADA; familiarity with Mitsubishi and Schneider Electric platforms is desirable.
  • Good understanding of electrical control circuits, I/O, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience with commissioning and fault‑finding on site.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to prepare clear technical reports and interact professionally with clients.
  • Organised, proactive and able to work independently or as part of a project team.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites as required.
