FULL DESCRIPTION

[Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] Volunteer

[Employer hidden] is a national literacy charity. We find and match volunteers to read with children in schools across the country. 1 in 4 children left primary school last year unable to read well. This means they are unable to fully access their secondary education and this can have a lifelong impact. [Employer hidden] wants to help change this with the help of our volunteers. There might be a school in your area waiting for a [Employer hidden] volunteer. Research shows that fewer and fewer children read for pleasure. [Employer hidden] volunteers are helping to inspire in children a love of reading and books. Our volunteers read with children on a 1:1 basis to help improve their reading skills. Volunteers must be able to commit to at least an hour each week for a full year during term time (although holidays can of course be taken). They will undergo an Enhanced DBS check, which is organised and paid for by the school. Volunteers must have a good standard of written and spoken English, but we do not require any specific qualifications and we do not have any age restrictions on our volunteers as long as they are over 18.

What difference you will make

Volunteers work individually with children to help improve their reading ability and also their enjoyment of reading. Volunteers spending 1:1 time with a child to enjoy books together is invaluable. Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom. Many of our volunteers say their weekly visits to school are the highlight of their week. The more volunteers we recruit the more schools and children we can support.

What additional skills or experience you should have

Volunteers do not require any specific qualifications. We do ask for a good level of written and spoken English. DBS checks will be carried out by schools. Some school will requires references.

What training we will provide for you

Initial safeguarding training and introduction to phonics. Optional training from [Employer hidden] through on-line forums. Introductory training from schools when volunteers are matched with a school.

What you will get out of volunteering for us

In addition to offering much needed reading support for children within schools, volunteering can help to combat isolation and loneliness. Our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week. Indeed, lots of volunteers become invaluable members of the school community itself. Volunteers make a huge difference helping children to develop their reading skills.
