Train to be a Volunteer Technician

Since the Pandemic, audiology services no longeroperate drop-in clinics, meaning vulnerable members of our community will potentially wait weeks for support. Our amazing volunteers visit people in their homes and offer support in days. These incredible volunteers recive full training on how to do hearing aid maintenance, find faults with either the hearing aid or the tubing and then offer support. They will also see what other equipment may be of use and work with the service manager to make further suggestions. This is an ESSENTIAL role and hundreds of people across Barnet need your help. Ideally you'll be able to make at least one visit every six weeks, lasting roughly an hour at most. A comprehensive training course is available so you'll only need a technical mind and a willingness to help others. All appropriate expenses will be paid and you'll have full-time support from the service manager. We already have several volunteers out in care homes and the residents have been so very thankful for all the help.

Currently, we have 7 volunteers in Barnet, helping hundred of people a year. It would cost over £400,000 a year to run a full service with paid technicians. There is no funding available for this kind of service so we rely heavily on the willing support of our amazing volunteers.

You just need a failry technical mind, steady hands and a desire to support the vulnerable members of our community. Full training and toolkits will be provided along with all expenses paid and suport from our full-time manager.

We provide full training on how to find a fault with a hearing aid. Over 80% of the issues tend to be about tubing that needs replacing. This is actually easy to fix but for elderly people with poor manual dexterity and eyesight, it's too challenging. Another 10% of isses relate to the dome or earmould being clogged with wax or debris. Again, this is easy to deal with. For those volunteers with an interest in technology, we also offer further training on assistive devices. We also cover other services that JDA provides along with Sensory Services and Barnet Council. We aim to use the request for help to not only fix hearing aids, but also see what other help a client could benefit from.

You'll get excellent technical experience along with the opportunity to meet some lovely people from the Jewish Community. Our volunteers get experience that can count towards becoming either a tecnician or audiologist if that is what you are looking for. Most of our volunteers are retired people who want to support the elderly members of the Jewish Community.
