Senior Support Worker

To provide support to individuals in their home, to lead a valued and fulfilling life and to maximise the potential capacity of all individuals, physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. To contribute to the overall management of the service, supporting the Team Leader within their role.

Job Description

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • To work alongside the Team Leader in ensuring the day-to-day supervision and direction required to enable their team to support individuals achieve their goals, aspirations, and development of life skills.
  • As a requirement within this role you will be expected to register with Social Care Wales and act in accordance with the code of professional practice for social care, duty of candour and the standards set within these guidelines.
  • To have appropriate qualifications for your role (QCF Level 3) or are currently working towards Level 3 or a recognised qualification as defined within the qualification framework for social care and regulated childcare (Wales).
  • To assist in the day-to-day running of the home and in all matters regarding the individuals’ daily lives.
  • To carry responsibility for the service, ensuring that high standards of care and support are maintained as a senior employee, adhering to all requirements and applicable regulations within the Social Services and Wellbeing (Wales) Act 2014 as well as the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016.
  • To supervise the work of support workers and relief staff, ensuring that all duties are carried out in such a way as to always maintain high care and support standards.
  • To discuss issues arising from the above with the Team Leader and Domiciliary Manager as necessary.
  • To work within a flexible rota system adapted to meet the needs of individuals living in the individuals’ home.
  • To work as part of a staff team in a constructive and supportive manner, attend regular staff meetings / workshops, individual support, and supervision meetings as necessary.
  • To work within a rota’d shift system inclusive of evening, weekend and bank holiday work. To sleep-in when arranged at a predetermined payment.
  • To always ensure the safety of the individuals, reporting promptly any concerns about the health, safety or wellbeing of individuals.
  • To notify the manager of any new criminal convictions you may have committed, including motoring offences.
  • To notify the Manager of any changes in your health that may affect you in your role.

Management of Staff

  • To lead and mentor with the Induction of new staff completing monthly induction reviews and contributing towards probationary review.
  • Mentoring and Monitoring of staff/performance including sickness monitoring and management liaise with team leader to address any concerns.
  • To hold informal interim, formal supervision, annual appraisals which would include the monitoring and identification of training in line with role requirements with support workers.
  • To hold formal meetings with support staff to address performance concerns, providing advice and guidance where appropriate.
  • To oversee the daily supervision of staff and ensure they are carrying out delegated tasks efficiently.
  • Ensure staff carry out key worker responsibility/mentoring responsibilities.
  • To be ‘on-call and Standby’ by arrangement.
  • To alert the Team Leader of any performance concerns or any other concerns which may affect support workers within their role.
  • To oversee shift rotas and ensure the service has adequate staffing levels.

Facilitation of care to Individuals

  • To advise, guide, support and assist individuals on all matters relating to their welfare and health and safety in conjunction with other staff, professional health care staff and agencies.
  • To function as a key worker/ co-keyworker within the team taking particular responsibility for an individual, ensuring Reviews, Care Plans, personal plans, , Risk Assessments and CHC Reporting documents are carried out effectively and efficiently. To competently co-ordinate and plan Reviews with and for individual individuals, chairing Review Meetings, and co-ordinating outcomes.
  • To assist in ensuring all staff are aware of and are working towards meeting agreed packages of care for all individual individuals.
  • To support individuals in making choices in such a way as to ensure that they have a healthy, culturally appropriate, and nutritious diet.
  • To help individuals to attain and maintain good standards of hygiene and personal care, aiding as appropriate.
  • Maintain a valued lifestyle and a positive approach to the individuality and autonomy of individuals, contributing to the on-going assessment, planning and implementation of behavioural guidelines and skills learning programmes.
  • To assist in ensuring all individuals are supported to go on an annual holiday.
  • To establish positive and trustworthy relationships with individuals, relatives, and external agencies.

Management of the Service

  • To contribute to the overall cleaning of the individual’s home and involve the individuals in these tasks as appropriate.
  • To organise and administer medication and conduct weekly audits in line with all Policies and Procedures and to maintain all associated records.
  • To be vigilant to the health and safety of individuals, visitors, colleagues, and others.
  • To report any Health & Safety/ Maintenance concerns to the Team Leader/ Head Office whilst also adding to the maintenance list.
  • To accurately maintain and update all records as required by [Employer hidden] and commissioning bodies and be confident with ICT.
  • To have a working knowledge of all Policies, Procedures, and guidelines within [Employer hidden].
  • To liaise effectively with colleagues, external agencies and relatives.

Professional Development

  • To undertake an initial three to six monthly probationary period, whereby your performance will be reviewed and suitability for the post assessed. This will be continuously reviewed and monitored over a two-year period.
  • To ensure mandatory training is up to date and refreshed where required.
  • To undertake courses and pursue own professional development and training. The company proactively encourages staff to improve their skills as appropriate.
