The Transport Department is an integral part of the School, providing a comprehensive service for students to get to and from school from a wide area . The School has a fleet of vehicles of varying sizes. The minibuses are also used for school sports fixtures, academic and enrichment trips, boarding trips at the weekends and DofE expeditions. The drivers are key contributors to our reputation for excellent pastoral care and work closely with the Deputy Head Pastoral, ensuring joined up thinking in the care of students and their families.

Accountability

The School Minibus Driver is accountable to the Head via the Transport Manager on matters relating to transport and Health and Safety, to the Senior Deputy Head Pastoral on matters relating to student wellbeing and pastoral care, and to parents.

Purpose of the Job

To transport day students from the surrounding area to School and return and provide transportation for trips, sports fixtures and other events.

Responsibilities

  • To drive School minibuses in a safe and legal manner to ensure the safe transportation of School pupils from the surrounding area to School and return;
  • To comply with Operator License Regulations by conducting a minibus daily check sheet before and after each journey, completing paperwork for tachograph requirements and attending a quarterly eye test;
  • To report any vehicle defects to the Transport Manager in a timely manner;
  • To go to pick up points as indicated by the Transport Manager ensuring that students are picked up on time and arrive at school by 08:20 (traffic and weather permitting);
  • To report any faults, breakdown and accidents with the school minibuses to the Transport Manager;
  • To comply with the School’s policies and procedures with regard to the safe transportation of pupils at all times;
  • To ensure that the minibus is safe, clean and secure when not in use;
  • To monitor fuel levels, ensuring that there is sufficient fuel in the minibus for the next journey;
  • To take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students under your care and supervision as minibus driver, including ensuring that students adhere to the Code of Conduct and that all passengers wear seatbelts throughout all journeys;
  • To report all complaints and incidences with students, parents or the public to the Transport Manager on return to the School;
  • To communicate with the Transport Manager (and parents if applicable) about any external factors such as flooding or roadworks that may affect their run via a School mobile phone.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Hold a Full Category D1 Drivers License;
  • Have a valid CPC qualification card;
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service;
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and well being of all students;
  • Ability to learn a route and pick up and drop off points easily;
  • Well organised with the ability to priorities work to deadlines and under pressure;
  • Smart appearance;
  • Excellent communications skills with parents and staff;
  • A flexible approach to adaptations of changes to work schedules if necessary;
  • The desire to undertake further training as may be required in order to properly perform the duties in a changing and challenging environment;
  • Honest, polite, reliable, punctual and committed.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in a similar role;
  • Experience in driving for young people;
  • Understanding of working in the Independent sector and/or a boarding school environment

In accordance with the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (as amended) and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (as amended), you must take reasonable care not to endanger yourself or other persons whilst at work.

You must co-operate with the School to enable it to comply with its legal duties for Health and Safety.
