Legal Cashier

Key Responsibilities of the Legal Cashier
- Bank reconciliation of all firm’s client and office bank accounts.
- Manage the firm’s internet banking systems, including handling client monies.
- Paying in client and office monies received at the bank
- Process payments and receipts, including transferring funds for bills and disbursements.
- Prepare and handle foreign payments.
Billing
- Approving bills
- Checking completion statements
- Posting Credit Notes and bill reversals where required.
General, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure all transactions comply with Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Accounts Rules and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations.
- Identify and report suspicious activity to the COFA, COLP and/or Money Laundering Reporting Officer
- Assist the finance team with internal and external audits where necessary
Payments
- Draw and distribute client and office account cheques.
- Maintain the Counsel and expert fees ledger and ensure timely payments.
- Process credit card payments from clients.
- Administer and reconcile petty cash.
- Post and pay invoices received from the firm’s suppliers, after obtaining the correct authorisation.
- Setting up and maintaining Standing Orders and Direct Debits for new partners and suppliers.
Receipts
- Monitor cheque received logs to ensure compliance with SRA Accounts Rules.
- Post monies received from clients for bills and disbursements
Major Responsibilities/Accountabilities
- Decision Making – Ensuring accurate posting of monies through the account’s software.
- Fraud Prevention: Identify and report suspicious transactions.
- Interdepartmental Liaison: Work closely with fee earners, partners, and administrative staff to resolve queries and ensure accurate financial records.
- Client Interaction: Communicate with clients regarding payments, billing queries, and account status (where applicable).
Education and Qualifications – Good standard of written and spoken English. Good mathematical skills. ILFM or AAT qualifications desirable. Commitment to ongoing professional development (e.g., ILFM membership, SRA Accounts Rules training).
Experience/Knowledge
- Several years’ experience in the legal industry as a Legal Cashier.
- Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of Solicitors Accounts Rules.
- Experience with legal accounting software or willingness to train.
- Experience supporting audits and implementing audit recommendations.

- Ability to prioritise and organise workload.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to work within time constraints, particular at month and year end.
- Significant ability in using word, excel, pivot tables.
- Ability to interpret and apply procedures.
- Clear, concise and logical verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience of using a case management system.
- Must be self-motivated.
- Significant ability to interpret financial information.
- Experience of manipulating numerical data and presenting them in a way in which they can be easily interpreted. Proven client care skills.
