What you’ll be doing

As our Consultant Gastroenterologist, you will be responsible for delivering diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures to referred NHS and private patients. You will be expected to deliver upper- and lower-day case gastroenterology services, principally carried out under local anaesthesia or without sedation. You will also be:

  • Performing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures, including OGD, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.
  • Acting as the Lead Consultant for Endoscopy on site—mentoring peers, overseeing best practice, and enhancing service delivery.
  • Contributing to audits, data reporting for JAG accreditation, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Managing patient outcomes including pathology results and referrals to local MDTs where needed.
  • Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team including consultants, endoscopy nurses, and management colleagues to maintain and improve clinical standards.
  • Engaging in regular clinical governance activities, including incident reviews, SPA time, and departmental meetings.
  • Supporting and, where required, delivering training for endoscopists in line with JAG standards.

What we look for in you

To be successful in this role, you will be:

  • JAG-accredited for independent practice in upper and/or lower GI endoscopy.
  • Demonstrable competence aligned to GRS and JAG KPIs (e.g., colonoscopy completion rate >90%).
  • GMC registration with a licence to practice.
  • Substantial experience in treating gastrointestinal conditions in a specialist setting.
  • A proactive, team-oriented approach, with a strong commitment to patient care and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to mentor and influence others.
  • Commitment to CPD, clinical governance, and contributing to strategic improvement of services.

Salary is competitive, but substantive employment only to be considered.
