Engineering Chargehand

We invest heavily in our people, our fleets, and the future of transport. We are now seeking an experienced Engineering Chargehand to join our team at Hemel Hempstead depot.

This is a key leadership position, combining hands-on engineering expertise with responsibility for supporting, guiding, and developing a skilled team of technicians, ensuring our fleet remains safe, compliant, and fully serviceable.

What We Offer

  • £28.06 per hour basic rate
  • Overtime paid at time and a half
  • Full-time, permanent contract

  • Initial Monday to Friday shifts, operating between 05:00 and 01:30, on a rotating early and late shift pattern

The Role

You will play a vital role in the day-to-day performance of the depot by leading engineering activity and ensuring all maintenance and repair work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, supporting, and motivating a team of engineers and fitters
  • Carrying out diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on PCV vehicles
  • Allocating work and monitoring performance against safety, quality, and service targets
  • Ensuring full compliance with DVSA, Health & Safety, and Arriva standards
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records and depot systems
  • Supporting the Engineering Manager with training, mentoring, and apprentice development

What We’re Looking For

  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  • Previous experience in a Chargehand, Supervisory, or Senior Technician role
  • Strong knowledge of PCV or HGV mechanical systems
  • Confident communicator with proven leadership capability
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including early, late, and weekend shifts
  • PCV license desirable, but not essential
