FULL DESCRIPTION
Solar PV Electrician
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Solar PV Electrician to join our UK-based renewable energy installation team. The successful candidate will be competent working on all levels of solar PV wiring—DC, AC, control, earthing—and fully familiar with UK electrical regulations, solar-specific standards, and best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, and maintain residential, commercial, and industrial solar PV systems
- Carry out all levels of wiring, including:
- DC wiring: module strings, fuse protection, isolators, string combiners, cable containment
- AC wiring: inverter outputs, distribution boards, generation meters, CT clamps, backup circuits
- Control wiring: monitoring systems (Ethernet, RS485, Wi-Fi), rapid shutdown/optimiser circuits
- Earthing & bonding: arrays, support structures, SPD integration
- Verify compliance with all UK solar PV standards and Codes of Practice
- Conduct testing, inspection, fault-finding, inverter diagnostics, and system verification
- Complete commissioning documentation, test sheets, and DNO notifications
- Ensure safe working practices in line with UK H&S regulations
- Work collaboratively with engineers, roofers, and apprentices on project delivery
You must be comfortable working in accordance with the following current UK standards:
Primary Electrical Regulations
- BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), 18th Edition (including latest Amendments)
- Part 7 & Section 712 (PV power supply systems)
- Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR)
Solar PV–Specific Codes of Practice
- IET Code of Practice for Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic Systems (latest edition)
- MCS Standards (for MCS-compliant installations):
- MIS 3002 – Solar PV installation standard
- MCS 012 – Roof mounting kit certification
- MCS 017 – Battery storage installation requirements (if hybrid systems)
- MCS 004 – Inverter product certification
DNO/Grid Connection Requirements
- ENA Engineering Recommendations:
- G98 – Microgeneration (<16A per phase)
- G99 – Systems >16A per phase
- (Plus G100 Export Limitation where applicable)
Health, Safety & Construction
- CDM 2015 Regulations
- Working at Height Regulations 2005
- Manual Handling Operations Regulations
- Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)
- Risk assessment & method statement (RAMS) compliance
Other Relevant Standards
- BS EN 62446-1 – Requirements for testing, documentation, and commissioning of PV systems
- BS EN 50583 – Building-integrated PV (where applicable)
- BS EN 62305 – Lightning protection (SPDs and bonding integration)
Qualifications & Skills
- NVQ Level 3 Electrical Installation (or equivalent)
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382)
- C&G 2391 (or equivalent) Inspection & Testing desirable
- Previous solar PV experience essential
- Knowledge of inverters, optimisers, hybrid systems, and energy storage
- Full UK driving licence
- CSCS or ECS card preferred
