Role:

sMRT is seeking a talented Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Research & Development team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth of sMRT’s product portfolio, focusing on innovative solutions for the marine and defence sectors. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in developing products from initial concept through to manufacture.

You will ensure all designs meet internal specifications, industry standards, and customer expectations, while exploring innovative solutions to support sMRT’s expanding product range. You will work closely with our R&D team, Project Manager, and cross-functional departments including Sales, Marketing, and Production, while engaging with suppliers and approval authorities to deliver high-quality products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and develop product ideas using customer demand and industry trends.
  • Provide input into design considerations during project initiation.
  • Complete mechanical designs of new products, including component and material selection, testing, and validation.
  • Ensure products meet agreed functional, technical, and performance standards.
  • Prepare calculations, specifications, and test reports for products and components.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, considering design feasibility, marketing, and saleability.
  • Produce detailed design and manufacturing packs for products and assemblies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant technologies and standards.
  • Provide input into supplier evaluation and selection.
  • Identify cost efficiencies throughout the project lifecycle and evaluate production options.
  • Support engineering, production, and operations teams during design, build, and testing phases.

What we are looking for:

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design standards with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Commercial awareness to deliver work to scope, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Confident communicator, able to work across teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Proactive, innovative, and solution-focused mindset.

Skills & Experience:

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks or Inventor).
  • Experience with electronic integration, injection moulding, and prototype development (3D printing).
  • Strong understanding of materials and component selection.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation and reports.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role, ideally within a fast-paced or marine environment.

Qualifications & Attributes:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Chartered or working towards chartership (desirable).
  • Safety-first approach with a proactive, can-do attitude and commitment to quality.
