Role:
sMRT is seeking a talented Electronics Design Engineer to join our Research & Development team to help drive innovation in our product portfolio. This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge designs for the marine and defence markets, collaborating across R&D, Sales, Marketing, and Production teams, as well as engaging with suppliers and approval authorities.
As an Electronics Design Engineer at sMRT, you will play a pivotal role in developing new products from concept to production. You will ensure designs meet functional, technical, and regulatory standards while supporting cost-effective manufacturing solutions and high-quality outputs.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research on product ideas, market trends, and customer demand.
- Contribute to design considerations and feasibility at project initiation.
- Deliver complex electronic designs, including component selection, testing, validation, and feasibility studies.
- Ensure products meet internal functional, technical, and performance standards.
- Produce calculations, specifications, and test reports on products and components.
- Collaborate with internal teams to consider mechanical design, marketing, and saleability.
- Create detailed design and manufacturing packs for products and assemblies.
- Maintain awareness of user requirements, approval expectations, and future technologies.
- Provide input on supplier evaluation and engagement.
- Investigate cost efficiencies across project lifecycles, evaluating production options and costs.
- Support engineers, production, and operations during design, build, and acceptance testing.
- Own schematic design, PCB layout oversight, component selection, and design reviews.
- Drive prototype bring-up, validation, and qualification testing.
- Lead root-cause analysis for design, manufacturing, and field issues.
What we are looking for:
- Strong knowledge of electronic design standards with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Commercial awareness to deliver work to scope, budget, and quality requirements.
- Confident communicator, able to work across teams and with external stakeholders.
- Proactive, innovative, and solution-focused mindset.
Skills & Experience
- Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD, KiCad, Eagle).
- Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and debugging electronics.
- Knowledge of power supply design, grounding, protection circuits, and EMC principles.
- Ability to select components based on performance, availability, cost, and lifecycle.
- Competence in producing clear technical documentation and design reports.
- Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in a similar electronics design role, ideally within marine or defence products.
- Experience working in fast-paced environments.
Qualifications & Attributes
- BEng in Electronic Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- Chartered or working towards chartership (desirable).
