The GP Mentorship and Support Programme offers support to future doctors and those applying to medical school. It provides practical understanding of working as a GP, helps navigate application and medical training stages, and offers education, mentorship, and paid employment opportunities during training.
What is the GP Mentorship and Support Programme?
This is a programme designed to offer support to future doctors and those applying to medical school
If you are interested in becoming a doctor, we can show you what frontline General Practice is like.
It will give you a practical understanding of what it’s like to work as a GP, as well as helping you navigate the application and medical training stages, from undergraduate to postgraduate training.
Who is it for?
- Anyone from York, Hull or Scarborough areas
- Specifically to local people from non-medical families and those who would not normally consider applying to study medicine.
- Sixth form students considering applying to become doctors
- Medical students
- Foundation year medical students
- Anyone on the GP training scheme.
What the programme offers GP mentor and support scheme
The programme will support you through your application and training process.
Your mentor will be
It will offer education, mentorship and the opportunity to gain paid employment during your training
It will give you the opportunity to meet and experience healthcare teams who work on the front line and hear their stories

What you can expect from your mentor
Your GP mentor will
- Listen & understand your situation & maintain confidentiality at all times
- Be available for you, helping you on your journey
- Explore your options, empower you and point you in the right direction
- Signpost you to information and people who can help you
- Help you reflect and find ways to improve
- Develop your approach to application processes, qualifications and progress points
- Help you set milestones and spot development opportunities
How does the programme work?
- Open to anyone from York, Hull or Scarborough areas
- To get on the scheme, you are invited to send a letter or video telling us why you should be considered for the programme
- Successful candidates will be interviewed by a GP partner
- Places are available to mentor you for up to 10 years
- We welcome local people and those from non-medical families to apply.
- We welcome people at every level – from sixth form right through medical training and beyond
Annual bursaries available
In addition to mentoring, the following bursaries will also be offered as part of the programme to support your training and development:
- Sixth form bursary - £250
- Medical student bursary - £250 per year, over five years
- Foundation year medical student - £250 per year
- GP training scheme - £1,000 per year development opportunities
