Technical Assessor

Location Head Office and Onsite - Brownhills & Sneyd Hill

Reports to Technical Assessment Manager

Hours 08:30 – 17:00 (40hrs per week)

About the Role

As a Technical Assessor, you will be responsible for independently reviewing, assessing, and approving waste streams, ensuring full compliance with environmental and legislative requirements. You will work closely with internal teams and external clients to ensure waste is classified correctly, safely processed, and appropriately routed for treatment, recovery, or disposal. You will also support the wider business by contributing to process improvements, NCR (Non-Conformance Report) investigations, and documentation control and supporting and mentoring Graduate Technical Assessors to develop and increase competency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently review pre-acceptance documentation, Client Lists, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and WM3 assessments for compliance.
  • Classify waste in accordance with WM3 guidance, ADR regulations, and COSHH standards.
  • Determine suitable treatment, recovery, or disposal routes based on site permit conditions and waste characteristics.
  • Liaise with our internal chemists, lab technicians and onsite sampling technician for sampling and testing as needed.
  • Review analytical data and ensure results are consistent with declared waste composition.
  • Manage the full waste approval process from initial enquiry review, client lists provided to final acceptance.
  • Ensure all assessment and approvals and related documentation are accurately recorded on the SAP system and compliant with ISO and Environment Agency requirements.
  • Maintain system information and documentation to support audit readiness and operational transparency.
  • Actively contribute to improving approval process efficiency, reducing turnaround times while maintaining compliance and best in class operational efficiency.
  • Ensure adherence to internal NCR processes and follow-up on any outstanding issues to drive accountability to support the Technical Sales Managers where required.
  • Provide technical and system support to internal teams, including sales, operations, and finance on any questions arising from technical assessments or enquiries from customers.
  • Communicate with customers to clarify information, resolve queries, and request any missing data needed for approvals.
  • Support the training and onboarding of junior team members, sharing knowledge and promoting consistency in assessments.
  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date pricing models and treatment options in line with waste classifications and commercial considerations.
  • Adhere to the workflow processes and ensure the SAP processes are followed in real time, including all notes and technical information added for clarity across the business.

Essential Qualifications & Experience What You’ll Bring

  • Science A levels, science degree or equivalent.
  • Experience in waste classification, technical assessment, or a related environmental/compliance role.
  • Strong working knowledge of WM3, ADR, COSHH, and relevant environmental legislation.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail when reviewing technical documents and regulations.
  • Proficient in handling technical documentation and using compliance systems.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with internal teams and external customers.
  • A proactive, problem-solving mindset with a desire to learn and grow.
  • Ability to work in a regulated, fast-paced environment, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
