Summary
As a Senior Commissioning Engineer, you will lead the implementation and delivery of the commissioning process of high voltage substations. Your expertise will ensure the reliability and efficiency of developing power distribution systems for major clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide technical leadership while driving the strategic delivery of commissioning projects.
- Drive innovation and efficiencies within the Commissioning teams while ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices across all group departments.
- Support the Commissioning Group, Engineering Directors and other departments to engage with key clients and stakeholders across different regions to align project goals with client expectations and regional specifics.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex protection-related issues during and post-commissioning and prepare technical reports and documentation for internal stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
- Provide technical guidance and training to junior engineers and technical staff.
- Support the development and delivery of training material of substation technologies including protection principles, commissioning tools and SCADA systems.
- Stay updated with industry standards and technological advancements in grid protection technologies.
- Drive the development of technical papers, presentations at conferences and memberships of technical committees across [Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk]. (Cigre, Engineers Ireland, IEEE, etc)
- Provide feedback to allow senior management to monitor project progress, budgets, and timelines across the group to ensure all projects are delivered on time and within budget. Proficient in relevant engineering software and tools (protection relay programming and configuration), with knowledge of industry regulations, safety standards, and quality assurance.
- Strong understanding of grid codes and electrical standards (e.g., IEC, ANSI).
- Proven track record in leading protection scheme implementations in large-scale projects.
- Development of commissioning plans and ensure delivery of commissioning packs for upcoming projects
- Attends project commissioning kick off and co-ordination meetings
- Reports equipment defects or calibration issues to commissioning manager
- Completes project RFI/TQ’s during commissioning and manage the design log process with subcontractors
- Commissioning of primary and secondary equipment on projects
- Configuration of projection relays, RTU, PLC, Power quality meters, and other substation automation systems
- Completion and submission of redline drawings during commissioning
- Attends FAT tests for equipment when requested
- Ensures all required site modifications are completed and validates as-built drawings
- Completion of commissioning and test documentation throughout project lifespan
- Provides declaration of fitness when commissioning is complete
- Completion of pre and post energisation testing
- Assists junior commissioning engineers with development
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Core Requirements/Qualifications/Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Master’s degree or higher is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in HV electrical contracting, with a proven track record of managing electrical commissioning projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proficiency in collaborating at an international level.
