FULL DESCRIPTION

Summary

Black & White Engineering (B&W) is seeking a Design Manager to lead the project, financial, QA/QC, and technical management and delivery of multi-disciplinary projects within their UK offices. The role involves managing projects, collaborating with technical experts and design partners, and contributing to business growth, with a focus on the data centre market.

Key responsibilities include leading a multi-disciplinary design team, managing project timelines and costs, collaborating with the design team, and acting as the lead project design manager. The role also involves client stakeholder relationship management and change management according to the change control process.

Required qualifications include a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience, extensive experience in project management within MEP engineering, and strong client relationship management skills.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

  • Contributes to the development and growth of the company by identifying new opportunities and potential areas for growth, and also maintaining and developing existing client relationships
  • Leads, mentors, manages the multi-disciplinary design team to ensure successful preparation and delivery on project and business goals
  • Develops, manages, monitors, and maintains project requirements, processes, records, and reports
  • Manages, reports, and reviews project timelines, costs, program, quality, and performance
  • Manages risk and performance monitoring, identifying and addressing performance issues
  • Collaborates with the design team and manages multiple workstreams to ensure quality and timely operation delivery for clients
  • Acts as the lead project design manager and liaises with the client and external design team as necessary for the successful delivery of projects
  • Manages client stakeholder relationships across the projects
  • Identifies and manages change to design scope and scheduling changes in accordance with the change control process, maintaining planning and cost control including design fee changes
  • Manages, monitors, and takes responsibility for the profit and loss
  • Coordinates monthly financial reports, both internal management accounts and external applications for payment
  • Negotiates positive outcomes, resource planning, providing motivation and management to virtual design teams working in multiple time zones

Core Requirements/Qualifications/Skills

  • A relevant degree in engineering, or equivalent qualification or sufficient suitable experience
  • Ability to demonstrate extensive experience in project management within MEP engineering, managing project deliverables and costs
  • Strong client, contractor, partner, and supplier relationship management
  • Thorough understanding of the end-to-end design process
  • Understanding of design process and MEP engineering, with data centre experience
  • Sound level of knowledge at the senior engineer level, managing multi-disciplinary teams

Due to the continued evolvement and expansion of our lead design consulting team, we are looking to recruit a Design Manager in each of our UK offices to lead the project, financial, QA/QC, and technical management and delivery of our multi-disciplinary projects. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with our technical experts and design partners. Reporting to our Regional Lead Design Manager and working closely with our technical colleagues, this role will be responsible for managing projects to deliver an excellent service to clients and assisting on the ongoing development and growth of the business as a whole, whilst providing sound technical, design, and contract management support.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

  • A relevant degree in engineering, or equivalent qualification or sufficient suitable experience
  • Ability to demonstrate extensive experience in project management within MEP engineering, managing project deliverables and costs
  • Strong client, contractor, partner, and supplier relationship management
  • Thorough understanding of the end-to-end design process
  • Understanding of design process and MEP engineering, with data centre experience
  • Sound level of knowledge at the senior engineer level, managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Desirable experience in data centre projects, or other critical engineering facilities
  • Experience of complementary specialisms such as architecture, structures, civils, security, and permits
  • Associate or student member of an appropriate professional body, such as MCIBSE, MIET, IMechE
  • Achieved or working towards Chartered Engineer status
  • Client-focussed with exceptional relationship management experience
  • Results-oriented individual with strong problem-solving, technical realisation, and reporting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Computer literacy which includes Microsoft Projects, records management programme software, PageTurn, and Microsoft Office
  • Sound knowledge of current health and safety issues and legislation
