Summary

The Consultant Ophthalmologist will provide high-quality clinical care to NHS patients, support community ophthalmology services, and perform minor eye surgeries and YAG laser capsulotomies. The role involves working as part of a cohesive team, taking responsibility for clinical issues, and participating in the on-call rota. The position is full-time and offers a salary of £110,000 per year.

  • Take responsibility for clinical and other relevant issues.
  • Participate in the on-call rota.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

To deliver high quality clinical care to NHS patients attending [Employer hidden — view at passion-project.co.uk] for Cataract surgery and general ophthalmology, the role will also include supporting the Community Ophthalmology Services (new patients, follow ups, glaucoma reviews), as well as perform minor eye surgery and YAG laser capsulotomies.

To work closely with the Clinical Services Manager, Business Manager, visiting Consultant Ophthalmologists, and directors to ensure smooth delivery of the service.

The ophthalmologist is expected to work as part of a cohesive team, to support and advise other team members, and to take responsibility for clinical and other relevant issues that may arise from time to time. The Ophthalmologist is responsible for taking emergency calls as required and will participate in the on-call rota.

SERVICE OVERVIEW:

[Employer hidden] provides Ophthalmology services on behalf of the NHS as commissioned by local Clinical Commissioning Groups such as Cataract Surgery, Aged Macular Degeneration, General Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, YAG Laser. In addition, we also deliver iSIGHT Community Ophthalmology services. The community service is designed to allow the patients to be treated, as an outpatient, closer to home and offering a choice of location. The services are provided from a choice of locations on different days of the week. Some sessions are flexible some are fixed.

MAIN TASKS - PRINCIPAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (not exhaustive)

  • Cataract surgery
  • Triage referrals when required
  • See, diagnose, and treat patients in a high-quality manner
  • Be effective in communicating with patients, GPs, optometrists, other clinicians, and Directors
  • Complete medical records and correspondence accurately and on time
  • Provide reports relating to patient incidents promptly
  • Meet all the criteria from GMC and RCO to maintain their license to practice. This includes revalidation, internal & external appraisal etc. Ensure that mandatory training is up to date
  • Deliver teaching and training to other colleagues and AHPs (Advanced Health Practitioners)
  • Be aware of local clinical governance reporting arrangements
  • Work as part of a cohesive team, and support the administration team to deliver a safe and efficient clinical service
  • Behave as a professional clinician as per GMC guidelines
  • Be punctual for clinical sessions and meetings
  • To support iSIGHT managers to achieve Key Performance Indicators
  • Perform regular audit and ensure effective audit mechanisms are in place
  • Support the team in the development of clinical links with other health delivery organisations
  • Work closely with other Consultant Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and other clinical staff including Nurses and Orthoptists, with management and other administrative staff.
  • May be asked to represent the company on certain occasions

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

  • Consultant Ophthalmologist
  • Must have experience in cataract surgery
  • Adequate and relevant experience as a consultant
  • Record of successful internal and external appraisal, revalidation
  • Experience in general Ophthalmology with exposure to subspecialty ophthalmology
  • Good time management and IT skills, working towards electronic records
  • Valid driver’s licence and personal transport

EXAMPLE OF JOB PLANNING

The typical job plan for an Ophthalmologist is split into 10 sessions per week. These sessions are approximately 3 ½ to 4 hours each.

This is a typical/draft plan which will remain flexible and subject to change following discussion with both parties (the Clinic Manager and the Ophthalmologist).

All applicants must possess a licence to practice in the UK requires, a professional appraisal, and revalidation in accordance with the GMC.

Employer appraisals take place with a probation review at 6 months and an appraisal annually.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) but would consider part-time
