FULL DESCRIPTION

Summary

Amano is seeking Specialist Mentors to support students in higher education with mental health difficulties and/or autistic spectrum conditions. The role involves providing student-specific support, helping them develop strategies for independent learning, and organizing sessions on campus, in-home, or remotely. Candidates must have experience working with students with disabilities and/or mental health conditions and meet specific qualification criteria.

  • Provide effective support to students in a higher education setting
  • Work with individuals who may face barriers to learning due to a variety of mental health and/or autistic spectrum conditions
  • Work with your student to identify strategies to help address barriers and to move towards independent learning
  • Provide support that is student specific and could include activities such as time management, planning, coping with anxiety and prioritising workload
  • Work to enhance your student’s autonomy and to monitor the effectiveness of strategies
  • Be responsible for organising sessions with your assigned students
  • Offer support on campus, in-home, or remotely as agreed with your student
  • Be required to complete Amano administration promptly and accurately
  • Follow Amano safeguarding, health and safety, lone working, and professional and personal boundaries policies

The Skills Required:

As an Amano Specialist Mentor you will:

  • Have experience of working with students with disabilities and/or people with mental health or ASC related difficulties
  • Be able to assess a student’s needs and with them establish an appropriate Individual Support Plan
  • Understand the needs, objectives, and constraints of others.
  • Have an understanding of the particular demands of study in higher education
  • Be able to clearly assess when a referral or ‘signpost’ to another service is required
  • Have the ability to plan, prioritise and organise your own workload
  • Have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Have good competency in using mobile IT
  • Be proactive in maintaining your CPD.

Essential Qualifications and Training:

For Mental health:

You will be educated to degree level and must have membership of (at least) one of the following organisations at the required level:

  • Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP) – Full member.
  • The British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) – Accredited membership.
  • The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) - Registered Member (MBACP) - Accredited Member (MBACP – Accred)
  • British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) – Under a member institution – Practitioners become registrants of the BPC through their membership of one of their member institutions. They do not have a category for individual membership.
  • British Psychological Society (BPS) – Chartered Member (CPsychol)/IAPT register/ Graduate Member (MBPsS) AND a PG qualification in Psychology or Mental Health.
  • Counselling & Psychotherapy in Scotland (COSCA) – Accredited (Other UK Professional body) Counsellor/Psychotherapist Member of COSCA    This category of membership requires you to be currently accredited with another recognised UK professional body for counselling and psychotherapy
  • Federation of Drug and Alcohol Practitioners (FDAP) – National Counsellor Accreditation Certificate (NCAC)
  • General Medical Council (GMC) – Psychiatry – Full member or above.
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) – Education and training programmes approved as a route to registration – Arts Therapist/ Occupational Therapist/ Practitioner Psychologist/ Social Worker in England
  • Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) – Accredited member
  • National Counselling Society (NCS) – - Accredited Registrants (MNCS Accred). - Accredited Professional Registrant (MNCS Prof Accred). - Senior Accredited Registrant status (MNCS Snr Accred). - NCS Fellowship (FNCS).
  • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) – Mental Health Nurse/ Community Mental Health Nurse / Psychiatric Nurse
  • Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC)
  • Social Care Wales (SCW)
  • Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC)
  • UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) – Full clinical individual member
  • The University Mental Health Advisers Network (UMHAN) – UMHAN mentor member. (N.B. UMHAN accreditation routes are now closed).
  • Association of Christian Counsellors (UK) – Accredited Counsellor

For Autistic Spectrum:

All Amano Learning Support Consultants are required to meet certain mandatory qualification criteria and/or have professional body membership

Hold a degree AND a teaching qualification AND comprehensive training in adult autism which must include:

  • ALL 5 National Autistic Society (NAS) core autism online training modules (Understanding Autism; Autism and Communication: Autism and Sensory Experience; Autism, Stress and Anxiety; Autism: Supporting families) OR
  • Have completed an NAS tutor-led course ‘Understanding Autism’ or ‘Introduction to Autism and the SPELL Framework’ OR
  • Other training, including at a Higher Education institution, delivered by an appropriately qualified trainer (a qualified trainer from a recognised organisation/charity, or a trainer who can demonstrate a relevant qualification in Autism)

OR

Hold a Post-Graduate Certificate in Autism / Post-Graduate Certificate in Asperger’s AND a teaching qualification (minimum Level 4).
