FULL DESCRIPTION

Summary

The Outside Porter is responsible for performing daily maintenance tasks to all exterior areas of the School, ensuring a clean, safe and welcoming environment. Duties include maintaining cleanliness, monitoring school buses, managing traffic, and ensuring the safety of children and visitors. The role also involves driving requests and deliveries, and assisting the maintenance department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all exterior public and private areas.
  • Liaise with external contractors to guarantee prompt waste collection.
  • Monitor and replenish essential consumables.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and cleaning of exterior areas.
  • Record daily arrivals and departures of morning and early afternoon buses.
  • Unlock and supervise the playground gate.
  • Aid and assist parents/guardians with enquiries.
  • Compact refuse and arrange for disposal.
  • Assist the maintenance department.
  • Liaise closely with parents and other visitors.
  • Water external plants and trees.
  • Liaise with the transport office for driving requests.

Core Requirements

  • A minimum of two years’ experience dealing with maintenance, porter or janitorial duties
  • A clean and valid UK driving license & confidence driving any vehicle in London
  • Ability to multitask and manage the completion of projects to deadlines

Hours: 7.00 am - 3.30 pm

Salary: £25, 155 - £26, 688 per annum depending on experience and qualifications

Overall purpose

The Outside Porter is responsible for performing a range of daily maintenance tasks to all the exterior surface areas of the School according to the seasonal weather conditions, ensuring a clean, safe and welcoming environment to all school entrances, pathways, playgrounds, car parks, steps and fire escapes and Goods Inwards delivery areas. The Outside Porter also plays a key role in monitoring and recording the arrival and departure of school buses from the School entrance, coordinating a safe parking procedure, managing traffic and monitoring the collection of Lower School children at the playground gate, in order to ensure the safety of all children and visitors at all times. The Outside porter is also responsible for any driving requests and deliveries.

Summary of Duties

  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all exterior public and private areas, including emptying outdoor waste bins and ensuring timely refuse collection to uphold high sanitation standards across the School’s outdoor environment.
  • Leasing with external contractors to guarantee prompt waste collection and reporting any concerns.
  • Monitor and replenish essential consumables such as compactor sacks, bin liners, rock salt, and cleaning agents.
  • Conduct thorough, twice-daily inspections and cleaning of exterior walkways, entrances, and surrounding areas, addressing litter, leaf debris, puddling, or icy conditions during winter.
  • Record daily arrivals and departures of morning and early afternoon buses at the Waverley Place entrance, managing and coordinating orderly and safe parking procedures.
  • Unlock and supervise the Marlborough Place playground gate at the Lower School’s dismissal time, ensuring only pre-authorized ASL parents or guardians access the playground and children leave with appropriate supervision.
  • Aid and assist parents/guardians as much as possible with all enquiries, particularly relating to deliveries, collections and drop-offs.
  • On a daily basis compact all the refuse in the compactor area in preparation for the following morning collection, and arrange for the disposal of other minor furniture items
  • Assist the maintenance department as and when requested by the Facilities Manager, daily duties permitting.
  • Liaise closely with parents and other visitors to ensure a high standard of child safety and well-being at all times.
  • Water external plants and trees as needed, and carry out ad hoc gardening duties on request.
  • Liaise with the transport office to manage driving requests, including but not limited to deliveries and collections.
  • Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the Operations Manager.

Selection criteria

Essential qualifications/experience:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience dealing with maintenance, porter or janitorial duties
  • A clean and valid UK driving license & confidence driving any vehicle in London
  • Ability to multitask and manage the completion of projects to deadlines

Desirable qualifications/experience:

  • Experience working in a school or other educational setting
  • Gardening or groundskeeping skills, being comfortable with using simple gardening tools
  • Experience using outdoor equipment or machinery
  • Understanding of waste and recycling procedures
